Purpose: The focus of the learning in this practical unit is on providing participants an opportunity to support and promote the health, nutrition, safety, protection and well-being of children in an early childhood development setting.

What you will learn:

The learning will enable participants to demonstrate an understanding of the following over a period of 3 months:

  • PM-04-PS01: Promote the safety and protection of children
    • Create inclusive, age and stage-appropriate, safe environments that support child safety
    • Deal with and plan for emergencies
    • Identify developmental challenges, including children experiencing barriers
    • Identify the signs of distress, maltreatment and types of abuse
    • Reinforce adult and child knowledge of health, hygiene and safety practices and routines in children's daily programme
  • PM-04-PS02: Support child nutrition
    • Plan a healthy weekly menu, including provision for children with specific dietary requirements and eating problems
    • Prepare healthy snacks and meals
    • Prepare a poster/teaching aid on healthy foods for use with children and parents
    • Advise parents to pack nutritional meals and snacks for their children
  • PM-04-PS03: Promote and support the health of children
    • Monitor children's health and well-being
    • Conduct a simple health check of a child
    • Recognise the signs and symptoms of both minor and serious illnesses as well as impairments in children
    • Weigh, measure, record and interpret children's heights and masses to monitor their growth
  • PM-04-PS04: Maintain a healthy and hygienic environment for children
    • Practice universal precautions while dealing with health issues in accordance with applicable policy requirements
    • Described hygiene practices, including clean water, disposal of waste, hand washing, sanitation, food preparation and ventilation, according to the applicable norms and standards
    • Appropriately handled the different physical care routines across broad phases, including babies, toddlers and young children
